Behind The Lens: A Change of Plans

Hello and welcome back!

So when I started this blog it became an entry for each shoot we did, but I quickly became a little bored with it.  Not to say that I'm bored with my shoots at all, there's just only so much interesting things to say about each shoot without giving away the entire life story of each of our clients and not everyone wants to be blogged about.  So instead I'll go back to why I really started to do this blog in the first place and that was to highlight the journey of starting a business in a field that has been terribly devalued by the digital age and not to mention starting it during a recession.  I will however share photos in here that you can't see anywhere else and share some of my favorites.  If you are a budding photographer who is reading this, this is the ONLY place you'll be able to see before and after pictures of my edits and get a few tips and tricks on how I do what I do (when it comes to editing).  And I'll just share my thoughts and feelings and things that are happening in the business or in the industry as a whole.  Share
decisions we make or have to make and just take you with us on this dream of ours.

A lot has happened since my last blog post in here.  For one, I officially changed my college major from Information Technology to Photography with the helpful advice of my lovely wife and some other friends.  This was a HUGE decision for me.  I'm currently still an IT at the Pentagon and that is what pays the bills and there's a LOT of money in that field if you have the right education, so that was the obvious choice for my degree.  Just one problem.... I HATED it!  Don't get me wrong, I'm ok with my job I have now and I like the people I work with but the classes are SO dry and we end up learning about technology that's 20 years old and isn't used anymore.  How is this helping me?  When it all boiled down, it came to the fact that most IT positions require a degree OR a certain amount of years of experience... well I have that, but I need everything I possibly can to separate myself from the overwhelming amount of people that have money to burn so they buy a DSLR camera and  then call themself a proffesional, so I decided (even thought it isn't necessary) to formalize my photography training and maybe even one day going for a Masters of Fine Arts.

Another MAJOR leap in our business was finding UNION 206 Studio (www.union206.com) in Alexandria.  We are currently members of this studio and share this space with a little over a dozen other photograhers that are local to the area and just awesome people to surround ourselves with and share visions and concepts with.  What this means for those that shoot with us is now we aren't limited to outdoor public locations and homes.  We now have a private professional studio with professional lighting equipment.  It's going to take our portraiture to the next level!  Our first shoot there was a maternity shoot and we wanted some incredible warm soft light and to show the beauty of a pregnant woman's body and that is just hard to do in a non controlled environment, so happy we found them and be sure to be on the look out for more of our shoots being held there.

Well I think I'll end this one here.  I don't think there will be a set schedule for these blogs since most of my time is being devoted to editing shoots in the little free time I have, but be sure to subscribe to our blog so that you can stay up to date with what's going on behind the lens!
